🌊 Welcome to the heart and soul of Surf Africa! 🏄‍♀️

Our passion for riding the waves and our dedication to crafting top-notch surf apparel are at the core of everything we do. Get to know the amazing individuals who make up our surf-loving family:

Garth Reid

Founder & Co-owner / Wavechaser & Boss Man

As the visionary behind Surf Africa, Garth has spent a lifetime riding waves around the world. His deep love for the ocean and commitment to sustainability are the driving force behind our brand.

“I grew up in Johannesburg, moved to Muizenberg at age 7. My educational journey commenced at Reddam High School (thanks to a sports scholarship). Following this, I ventured to Stellenbosch Uni and delve into study Sports Science, then persued a professional career in Water Polo abroad. Upon retruning to my homeland, I emabrked on a diverse path, immersing myself in the world of English & Psychology.

My life took an exciting turn in 2013 when I crossed paths with Layla. She introduced me to the enchanting world of the film industry, where I dedicated a year of my life. When Layla decided to leave her corporate job, we saw this as an opportunity to collaborate and pave our way for our future endeavors. Our goal was to build savings for a TEFL course and work abroad…. Little did we know, life had other plans.

In 2013, the seeds of Blended were sown, and we kickstarted our journey at festivals, running a smoothie and coffee bar to fund our TEFL dream. As time passed, instead of bidding farewell to our venture, we deicided to expand it further. Our humble market store / food trailer evolved into Eat. Surf. Yoga Lifestyle Centre. It was during this period that Surf Africa came to life.”

Layla Reid

Founder & Co-owner / Ocean Guardian & Boss Lady

Sustainability is more than a buzzword for Layla. She works tirelessly to reduce our environmental footprint, from eco-friendly materials and ocean-friendly packaging to community beach cleanups. Layla’s heart is for our Earth & our Ocean.

“I embarked on a unique path, uncertain of what to study. At the age of 19, I enrolled in an online marketing course througb UCT and ventured into my own marketing business, before social media became a dominant force. However, the instability of entrepreneurship didn’t resonate with me, leading me to transition into product development. I spent a few years as a product development assistant at a fashion house whilst briefly studying fashion during that time.

Yet, I soon realized that I wasn’t finding fulfillment in my role. In pursuit of my passion, I abandoned my studies and left my job. Alongside Garth, I founded Blended, a smoothie and coffee bar that traded at festivals to fund our dream of traveling abroad. What began as a festival stall steadily evolved into a food trailer business, spanning 5 years of growth.

Although we initially aimed to leave the country once more, unforeseen circumstances led us in a different direction…. Establishing EAT.SURF.YOGA in 2018, a pivotal moment that gave birth to Surf Africa.”
